Wedding Gift Etiquette
What makes a great wedding gift?
The ideal wedding gift is one that comes from the heart, is useful and will be remembered by the couple for the years to come. It’s not necessarily the most expensive or lavish present – just one that shows you genuinely care and wish the newlyweds all the best for the future.
Do I have to buy a gift from the wedding registry?
An item from the wedding registry is a safe bet and ensures that you’ll get the new couple exactly what they want, but don’t feel restricted. The wedding registry is also meant for your gift-giving convenience, so if there’s something else you’d like to give, go ahead!
How much should I spend on a wedding gift?
Give as generously as you can, depending on your feelings for the bride and/or groom and what you can afford. If your budget doesn’t match your sentiments, you may want to consider organising a group wedding gift with other friends who are attending the wedding. This way you can get the newlyweds something truly impressive without breaking the bank.
When do I give the wedding gift?
It’s best to send the wedding gift to the new couple’s preferred address just before or shortly after the wedding. While carting your wedding gift to the reception itself may seem like the natural thing to do, in many cases it saves a lot of effort for both parties if the gift is sent directly to a home address. This way, the chances of your wedding gift going astray or getting damaged are also minimised.
How long do I have to give a wedding gift?
Tradition dictates that you have up to a year after the wedding to present your wedding gift. However, the sooner the better – try not to leave it later than 2-3 months. After all, your wedding gift should be a part of the newlywed’s new life together! If you find your wedding gift must be unavoidably belated, we recommend that you either investigate what they may still need for their home life or treat them to something pampering, like a weekend break or luxurious toiletries.
Is it ok to give money instead of a wedding gift?
In most cases, money will much appreciated, unless the couple is particularly wealthy. While it can be unseemly for a couple to ask for money, it is never rude for you to give it to them. Most newlyweds will be saving up for something big for their new life together, and by contributing you’ll be helping them achieve their goals. The best way to present your monetary wedding gift is to write a check to either the bride or groom and add a small personal touch, such as a framed photograph, kitchen gadget or a long, heartfelt letter detailing your wishes and advice for their marriage.
What if the couple requests ‘No Gifts’?
It’s poor form to not give the couple anything on their wedding day, so we suggest that instead of a wedding gift you either donate money to a charity of their choice or treat them to a romantic experience that they can share, such as Dinner on the Thames or a ride on the Oriental Express.
